Airport traffic grows in Portugal as international demand increases

Portugal’s aviation market delivered further progress in 2025, consolidating the country’s position as a strategic gateway linking Europe with the Americas and other international destinations.

According to preliminary figures from Statistics Portugal, passenger movements at Portugal’s national airports rose by 4.7% over the course of 2025. The increase reflects sustained international demand and continues to reinforce key sectors including tourism, property and professional services.

December closed the year on a firm footing. During the month, 4.9 million passengers travelled through Portugal’s airports, representing a 4.6% rise compared with December 2024.

The monthly breakdown also indicates a daily average of 82,100 disembarked passengers in December, notably higher than the approximately 78,000 recorded one year earlier. This equates to year on year growth of 5.2%.

Growth during the winter period is particularly noteworthy, as it demonstrates that Portugal’s appeal extends beyond peak summer tourism. The country continues to attract both leisure visitors and business travellers throughout the year.

Across 2025 as a whole, passenger traffic increased by 4.7%, following 4.3% growth in 2024. This pattern of steady annual expansion points to long-term structural momentum rather than short-term fluctuation.

Air connectivity remains a cornerstone of Portugal’s economic framework. Expanding route networks and higher passenger volumes directly support tourism income, foreign direct investment and cross-border trade.

Air traffic rises alongside growing international interest in Portugal

As Portugal strengthens its position as a European hub for technology ventures, renewable energy initiatives and internationally focused service providers, reliable and growing aviation capacity is essential. Strong connectivity enhances competitiveness and facilitates access to global markets.

The hierarchy of Portugal’s five main countries of origin and destination remained unchanged in 2025, underlining the stability of its principal travel corridors.

The United Kingdom once again ranked first, recording growth of 2.4% in disembarked passengers and 2.2% in embarked passengers. The resilience of UK Portugal routes reflects enduring tourism flows alongside established property and business relationships.

France retained second position despite slight contractions of 2.3% in disembarked passengers and 1.9% in embarked passengers, illustrating the maturity of this longstanding bilateral market.

Spain, Germany and Italy completed the top five, highlighting Portugal’s strong economic and aviation links with major European partners.

This breadth of demand is a critical advantage. A well-balanced mix of source markets reduces exposure to volatility in any single country and contributes to overall sector resilience.

With airport modernisation and expansion projects continuing to move forward, prospects for 2026 and beyond remain favourable.

For investors considering opportunities across hospitality, real estate, logistics and related services, Portugal’s aviation trajectory provides further evidence of sustained, long-term strength.
