Portugal has officially been named the number one destination for Americans looking to move abroad, according to a new survey conducted by Expatsi, a relocation-focused travel platform.

The survey analysed responses from over 116,000 U.S. citizens, highlighting Portugal’s growing reputation not just as a European holiday hotspot, but as a top choice for long-term relocation.

The study ranked countries based on user preferences, including climate, budget, and language. Portugal secured the top spot, ahead of popular destinations such as Spain, the UK, Italy, and New Zealand. According to respondents, motivations for leaving the U.S. included a desire for personal growth and adventure, as well as increasing political division and domestic uncertainty.

Portugal’s appeal among Americans is well established, but its recent surge in popularity is being fuelled by its high quality of life, accessible residency options, and a favourable tax environment for newcomers.

A major draw for long-term American migrants is the country’s Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme. Though the Golden Visa programme has undergone changes—shifting focus from real estate investments (which were disqualified in 2023) to alternative investment funds—it remains a strategic route for securing European Union residency.

Applicants can obtain residency and, after five years, dual EU citizenship and a passport, all without being required to live full-time in Portugal during the initial period.

Portugal permits dual residency, allowing Americans to legally reside in both the U.S. and Portugal. This flexibility is ideal for those wishing to divide their time between the two countries, whether for business, family, or lifestyle preferences.

The benefits are substantial: a stable and sunny climate, world-class food and wine, a highly rated healthcare system, and safe, vibrant cities. Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve continue to see growth in international communities, further enhancing Portugal’s appeal.
