Portugal's wine regions have picked up fresh international recognition, with three restaurants named among the world's best winery dining experiences in Wine Enthusiast's 2026 list.
Mesa de Lemos in the Dão, Bomfim 1896 in the Douro and Malhadinha Nova in the Alentejo represent Portugal on the list, which covers 57 restaurants globally and 22 across Europe. The selection singles out venues where the setting, food and wine together make the winery itself a destination.
In the Dão, Mesa de Lemos sits at Quinta de Lemos near Viseu, its dining room built almost entirely from glass and overlooking the surrounding vineyards. The restaurant has held a Michelin star for seven consecutive years, alongside a Michelin Green Star for sustainability.
Chef Diogo Rocha's menu draws on seasonal produce from across Portugal, including sea bream from the Algarve and pineapple from the Azores, built around what he describes as a cuisine rooted in territory, seasonality and the surrounding landscape.
In the Douro, Bomfim 1896 takes a more traditional approach. Located at Quinta do Bomfim in Pinhão, part of the Symington family's historic Port wine estate, the restaurant cooks over wood fires in an open kitchen, with dishes such as smoked eel and slow-roasted kid drawn from regional family recipes.
Further south, Malhadinha Nova represents the Alentejo. Part of the Herdade da Malhadinha Nova estate near Beja, the kitchen uses produce grown or raised on site, including the estate's own Alentejo black pigs, giving traditional Alentejo dishes a lighter, more contemporary treatment.
Taken together, the three restaurants highlight the range of Portugal's wine tourism offering, from the terraced slopes of the Douro to the hills of the Dão and the wide plains of the Alentejo. Their inclusion on a global list is a further sign of how established Portugal's food and wine scene has become as a reason to visit, and increasingly, to stay.
